Birmingham Ultra Trail Society (BUTS) and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve are teaming up to host the Darter Dash 5K & 10k on Saturday, October 21. It is a glorious run through the trails at one of Birmingham's great outdoor treasures. These trails include some moderate elevation and you'll run along some beautiful stretches beside Turkey Creek. Only a very short period of each race will be on pavement. The Preserve protects a stretch of the creek that is the only place in the world where the Vermilion Darter, as well as other Darter species, live. It is truly a unique and beautiful place. Federally listed Watercress and Rush Darters are on the property too.

All proceeds go to fund educational programs at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, 3906 Turkey Creek Rd, Pinson, Alabama 35126

Packet Pickup & Race-day Registration: The morning of October 21 from 6:30am to 7:45am. The 10k will start at 8 am, and the 5k will follow at 8:15 am.

We'll have a post-race award ceremony featuring truly unique awards and we'll provide a hot breakfast for all race participants and their supporters. We encourage all runners to stick around and enjoy the Preserve!

All proceeds go to fund educational programs at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve.

I'm entered !

Fat Man division 7.

The Snail Darter Stroll.

Regarding B'Ham activities...

A few months ago I spoke with Charles Y. who hosted the Bio Blitz last year at the Turkey Creek Preserve.  This year the Bio Blitz did not sync with the Darter Festival as it did  in 2016.

I am unsure when they will hold the 2017 Bio Blitz.  I suspect it has already occurred.

The last I heard they wanted to do the BioBlitz in the fall because of better weather. But maybe not this year? I'll certainly ask next Saturday. I thought April was good, even with somewhat high water.
