[Eggheadfish]

Hello all,
I just joined the forum and NANFA this week.

I've been in the fishkeeping and angling hobbies for a while.
For native fish I currently keep green sunfish and longears. I've also kept bluegills and pumpkinseeds but I am reducing the number of overall species in my fish room.
I also keep and breed a number of tropical fish, South and Central American and some Asian species, including two CARES fish.

As I move forward I'm more interested in the fish that are in my own backyard. I'm also very alert to the needs in conservation and education and want to do my part to help.

I'm trying to get closer to the DEEP and the biologists that work with them. Hopefully I'll be able to engage in some restoration projects next year. They do a lot of neat things.
In the meantime I just learn as much as I can!

Welcome!  It sounds like you just took two very significant steps in your process of learning about native fish and the environment.  I am regularly amazed at the wealth of knowledge that exists within the membership of NANFA!  Like you, I have kept a wide variety of tropical fish over the years and am finding my aquariums becoming more and more committed toward native fishes.  If you are willing to share, I am curious to know about your current tanks (size, filtration, lighting, etc.) and their inhabitants.

@lilyeah here is the current setup:
150g: red hooks, guianacara dacrya, heros notatus, whiptail cat, corydoras metae, trilineatus, melanistius, and sodalis
125g: Odessa barbs, gold barbs, and my "catchall" for loaches. I have a large group of syncrossus berdmorei and beauforti, and then a handful of other guys (striata, kuhli, sidthimunki, Dario, sinibotia robusta, Kubotai
110g: Rio mag umbees (growouts)
90g: green sunnies (will be in a 125 shortly)
55g: amatitlania myrnae and priapella chamulae
30g: corydoras splendens, aspidoras, keyholes
20g: longear growouts (will be in a 125 shortly)
20g: guianacara growouts
I use FX6 on the large tanks, everything else is air driven (box and sponge)
Lighting is mostly Fluval Aquasky or Current LEDs, some CFLs

That is a nice collection of fish - I'm sure that they appreciate the canister filters!  That seems like a nice setup for you to continue to transition to natives! 

 

Have you found that your knowledge of working with cichlids has carried over to sunfish?
