I apparently had him in the metal live trap. He chewed his way out!

 

You can see where he left some of his fur. To the left and down is an opening created by gnawing one of the wires in two. Not pictured is a bulge in the frame pushing outward. Had a friend warn me you can't keep them more than a few minutes in a live trap. He was right!

Wow, earlier this year I had a mink raid my chicken coop. Pound for pound they are pretty formidable. Hated to do it but I had to set a conibear trap to save my egg layers!!!

Set traps for Muskrat and you are likely to get the Mink.  My dogs tear Mink up as well as the Mink are more a threat to chickens penned by fenn.

I have no muskrat in my ponds probably due to the mink and that lack of cattails which I eliminate. 

 

I have several conibears set up. I have and three tripped with no mink. Built two "cubby traps" baited with salmon made out of PVC pipe. Hoping...

Update: Nothing in the traps. No mink tracks sited but larger tracks that look like a feral cat or maybe even a bobcat seen cutting through the property and across the ice.

Interesting. Must not be a bobcat then. Must be a feral cat or some irresponsible owner that lets his cat out at night to destroy wildlife.

Doh. Don't get us started on outdoor domestic cats. In Ohio, a pet cat running around is afforded the same protection as feral cats. None. Touchy subject!

What sad is the incredible number of them at humane shelters due to irresponsible owners that don't get them neutered. 

 

I've live trapped a few in past that were breeding on my deck at 3 A.M. driving my dog nuts and waking us up. One of my neighbors moved away and dumped his cats.

I've live trapped a few in past that were breeding on my deck at 3 A.M. driving my dog nuts and waking us up. One of my neighbors moved away and dumped his cats.

Same thing here about 13 years ago. People next door moved out suddenly. Left their garage door open about a foot, and the entry door inside open, and about a dozen cats as a bonus. We had cats in our yard all the time. I could live with that, but come spring or early summer, they had multiplied. All was okay until my wife left her car windows down for a couple of hours between errands. One of the cats chose to mark it's territory in our son's car seat. Then it was war. I won. Apparently the people who bought the house had to tear out all the subfloors, but had nearly any cats to deal with by then.

Any luck trapping the mink az?

 

No. No sign as we have a fair amount of snow now. Two traps set with salmon and nothing yet. It's been really cold (below zero) and the ponds are frozen in very solid. No sign in the snow where I have some open water due to winter diffusers to prevent winter kill.

Are you using a submerged trap? The simple flap style muskrat traps with no trigger might work for mink. They get in, but can't get out. Hate to say it so brutally, but the panic of drowning may not give them time to get out. Problem might be keeping fish out of trap if it is baited. I assume they may be in burrows similar to muskrat, and still hunting beneath the ice?

No submerged traps.  Could be burrows but I don't seen any air holes or anything.
