I am in the planning of a 10 gallon drop off (college only allows 10 gallon). Is it better to have more shallow space and less deep end of more 50/50? my plan was to make the tank out of 3/8“ acrylic with a custom stand and hood. I also might do a 5 gallon refugium too. I was thinking darters and killifish or minnow species

Good morning,

 

It will be much less costly to buy a glass 10 gallon from PetSmart or Petco when they have a 1$ per gallon sale.  Building your own drop-off tank out of that thickness of acrylic is going to be much more expensive and more of a hassle than it is worth in my opinion. 

 

a single 48" x 24" sheet of 1/4" (.22 inch) acrylic is going to run about $62 at Lowes for example.

 

Also, for the sake of having more water volume a standard flat bottom aquarium will allow for more stability in the water chemistry, which is important on a tank thats already on the small end of the spectrum.

 

Additionally, I would do a  just do a sponge or HoB filter on a 10g.  Keeps it simple and mitigates the likelihood water damage from overflows.

That’s cool that you are concerned but I’m going ahead and making my dream tank, it’s my senior project with my grandpa (we do projects almost every summer) and I have a job so I can off set some of the costs too. I was thinking about doing a connected refugium to the actually tank like this picture, I would have moss and bioballs not reef rock. But you see the basic idea?

Looking into it more, although it would be cool and all I might just do a basic 26” L x 8” W x 12” H. I’m thinks of doing a strong flow stream tank like a river manifold setup with darter species and maybe a small minnow species and for plants maybe dwarf hairgrass and vals
