Those TN Aquarium tanks are probably 40 gallon at least, they're surprisingly high.

Time to bring this baby possibly back from the dead? I have been looking at colleges more and found I think what might be my holy grail college. Bemidji State University complete with my dream major of Wildlife Biology, lots of lakes and forests, D1 hockey (I’m a hockey fan), outdoors club, close to home and I CAN HAVE A 20 GALLON FISH TANK IN MY DORMS!!!! the planning lives on another day. Now I just need to find all the fish to stock the tank

Project Resurrection has hit its first snag. While reading the rules and regulations from the MNDNR I can only buy from certified dealers, no wild collection for me. This isn’t too bad though as I can always go look at the habitat and fish in the wild while having my own captive fish in the dormfcd7fe2f65151567abe61bdd181c13e2.png

I’m going to the Buffalo River which is a tributary of the Red River Of the North on Labor Day to look at the eco type and catch some nice creek smallies

Hmmm ... sounds you may also be required to squeeze all the local water out of them before transporting.

Minnesota is uptight with water rules which is fine because of the bloody zebra mussels and other invasives

The species I’m thinking about go as follows:

Centerpiece fish:
-Orangespotted Sunfish (Lepomis humillis)
-Logperch (Percina caprodes)

I am leaning more towards a single male Orangespot sunfish.

“Minnows”:
-Weed Shiner (Notropis texanus)
-Sand Shiner (Notropis stramineus)
-Mimic Shiner (Notropis volucellus)
-Southern Redbelly Dace (Chrosomus erthyrogaster)
-Northern Redbelly Dace(Chrosomus eos)

I was thinking maybe about 6 total mix of the Shiner species and around 3-4 of either species of Dace?

Darters:
-Rainbow Darters (Etheostoma caeruleum)
-Banded Darter (Etheostoma zonale)
-Iowa Darter (Etheostoma exile)
-Johnny Darter (Etheostoma nigrum)
-Fantail Darter (Etheostoma flabellare)

I for sure want a pair of rainbows and a few Johnny darters, maybe I can add a 3rd species to the mix?

Extras:
-Banded Killifish (Fundulus diaphanus)

This is just an idea, don’t think it will fit in the setup or make the final cut.

Inverts:
-Native Snails
-Ghost Shrimp

I know both of these will end up as food, I can always restock them as needed.

I have cut the list to my final selections. My centerpiece fish will be an Orangespotted sunfish and will be the last fish added. I’m still thinking about getting 3 Sand shiners, 3 mimic shiners and 3 southern Redbelly Dace. The darters will probably end up being a pair of rainbows, 3-4 Johnny darters and the 2nd to last fish will be a lone fantail Darter.

Do whatever you like. It is interesting that you favor nondescript minnows. I have kept sand and mimic. Both are easy, typical shiner or minnow. Take flake food almost immediately. SRBD are pretty similar, and with good care can show color year round. Have a feeding plan for the darters. The frozen or live food for them must get past the silvery feeding frenzy and down to their level.

I’m back! I toured Bemidji State and I fell in love, the college is on Lake Bemidji, everything is close together, the community is nice, it’s close to home, has DI hockey (watch not play) and there are tunnel systems connecting each biking so I don’t have to go outside in -32 weather! I talked with the aquatic biology professor and he said that if I clean up some of the tanks, I can use them!!! So I might take a large green one for some fish. I still will have the 20 long in my dorm. There is room on the desk for my tank so that’s where it’s going. I also think that since I’m at a college I can get by collecting fish. Still thinking mimic shiners, rainbows, johnnys, and maybe a logperch.

Cool!  I made quick friends with several biology profs and grad students when I arrived on campus with a monitor and tegu that I couldn't keep in my dorm.  They gave me space for my lizard cage in one of the Bio-Sci lab areas, in exchange for helping care for some other research animals, which i loved doing anyway.  They were glad to see a new Biology undergrad who was ecology-oriented, not just another Pre-Med student (the bulk of Bio majors). That was 40 years ago.  I hope you find others there who share your passion.

After searching around I found a list of fish native to Lake Bemidji (the lake my college will be on)

black bullhead

black crappie

bluegill

brown bullhead

burbot

hybrid sunfish

ake whitefish

largemouth bass

muskellunge

northern pike

pumpkinseed

rock bass

tullibee (cisco)

walleye

yellow bullhead

yellow perch

redhorse

shorthead redhorse

white sucker

banded killifish

common shiner

finescale dace

golden shiner

Iowa darter

Johnny darter

logperch

mimic shiner

spottail shiner

Any ideas on of these fish what would work? I'm thinking for darter species; Iowa, Johnny, logperch and minnow species; mimic shiner, finescale dace, banded killifish.
