So I ordered a canister filter for my 55 gallon, and I'm honestly so confused. The instructions it came with are not very clear. First I have a question, when it says that the first tray should contain the mechanical filtration, does it mean the first from the bottom or the top?? Because I assumed it was the one on top but the picture shows the one on the bottom. And my main issue is that the outlet/inlet attachments can not be secured on the rim of the tank because the little edge that sticks out to hold the glass lid. I'll take a picture to show you more clearly what I mean if I'm not making sense.

If someone could help me that would be fantastic!

Typically mechanical filtration will go in the top, from coarse to fine (so sponge on top of filter floss/polyfil).  This just to keep the bio media from getting gunky as fast.

As far as the intake and outlet attachments, take a picture, I am only familiar with Fluval and Eheim, which have a clip with a suction cup that routes the hose over the brace of the aquarium.  Most commercially available lids have sections that snap out that allow of filtration plumbing.

I looked up some pictures of the canister.  It looks sharp.

So the intake and outlet attachments have 2 thumbscrews each.  Loosen them as far as they will go.  It appears that the thumbscrew side will go on the outside of the tank, you may have angle the attachments so they fit over the brace that the lid sits on.  Once you have them in position, you can tighten down the screws to keep the plumbing in place.

When I angled it down so the screws could reach the outside of the tank, the outlet attachment was too high and I couldn't close my lid. I'm thinking I might have to cut part of the brace off if that's possible I can't think of any other way. Not sure why they designed it that way! I'll definitely take a picture when I get home

I would suggest modifying the lid rather than the brace for two reasons. 1.) If you break part of the brace, you may compromise the structural integrity of the tank. 2.) If in the future you decide to go a different direction and change lids or even filtration, you can do so and still have an unmodified tank.  Just my 2 cents.

I was worried about comprising the tank that's why I wasn't sure. I'll have to get creative. I'll show pics when I get home later today
