MS Assistantship Fisheries

Title: Assessing distribution of Yaqui Catfish in the Rio Yaqui drainage, US-Mexico

Agency: Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management

Location: Stillwater, OK

Job Description: Yaqui Catfish Ictalurus pricei is a federally-threatened species in the US and Mexico. The incumbent will conduct research on factors affecting Yaqui Catfish distribution in the Rio Yaqui Basin using existing data to construct an ecological niche model and determine presence at several locations using environmental DNA. Start date is August 2018.

Qualifications: BS degree in fisheries, ecology, or related field, GPA > 3.0, and competitive GRE scores. Work will include extended travel to Mexico in the Sonora desert, in potentially harsh conditions, working with local experts in the region. The student must be bilingual in English and Spanish (speaking and writing). The successful applicant will be highly motivated, able to work independently and in a group setting, Experience working in Mexico and desert environments, using ArcGIS, and camping/working in remote settings is highly desirable.
