I walked away thinking this was a Weed Shiner, but the blue stripe is throwing me.

Caught in the Blackwater Watershed - 03140104 - pretty far removed from the range of the bluestripe shiner.

Appreciate any input - None of minnows seem to match

I'm leaning towards cummingsae = dusky.

Blackwater does odd things to the overall coloration of many species.  If weed is in the watershed, then that is probably what it is.  Other than the darker, more bluish band, it fits weed pretty closely.  It does look like a dusky but it is missing the thin gold line that duskys have above the band and duskys typically don't have pigmentation in the dorsal while weeds can.

Doug's leaning looks plausible. Coastal shiners can get pretty dark like that in blackwater creeks too.   Fins spread and mouth closed would be better for ID of course.  I've never seen weed shiner.

Weed is basically the gulf coastal from what i can tell.  They look very similar except weed has a caudal blotch more like a dusky lacking the trianglish shape common in coastals.  If this fish were caught here, I would call it a coastal.  Coastals/weeds get the more bluish black band.  I have never seen a dusky that had any blue tint.

Thanks guys - I am fairly certain it is not coastal - from my understanding the main distinguishing characteristic between weed and coastal is that coastal has no markings below the lateral line while weed shiners display the cross hatching below the lateral line.

The shiners in this watershed are

Blackmouth

Blacktail

Blacktip

Bluenose

Coastal

Flagfin

Golden

Ironcolor

Longnose

Pugnose

Sailfin

Tailight

Weed

I will just go with weed since that seems to be the consensus unless somebody else has any other input

thanks guys!

I've caught some of these down around Crestview FL (Blackwater/Yellow) area, I thought they were Weed Shiners.
