I was very exited to stumble on this site and have really enjoyed reading the content. I was born and raised In Chicago. I lived there for 25 years and just recently moved to Asheville NC. I've fished my whole life and enjoy exploring and collecting. I got into fish keeping about 5 years ago. I was never into tropical fish, instead I was drawn to native fish. At the moment I have 2 pairs of redfin pickerel. One pair I've had for 3 years and the other a few months. I also have a 3 year old alligator snapper. I have a 280 gal tank I'll be setting up soon to house my pickerel. I also plan on trying to collect some smaller bass species for it maybe shadow,rock or redeye among others. I look forward to talking with others on here.

Just Checked it out looks great. yea I've had a lot of fun exploring the area. Its also nice to have so many other nice places within a few hour drive as well.

Welcome, I think redfin/grass pickerel are one of the best native fish out there. They have all of the cool Esox attributes without the size. I have been able to get them on frozen shrimp as a convenient part of their diet. Helps fill in the gaps between live feeds. Makes them a bit easier to keep.

Yea I agree, I love them. I plan to make them the focal point of my big tank. I'm hoping to also set up a tank with some Redfin that are found in more acidic waters. The ones I've seen have beautiful dark contrasting colors and seem to be larger. Yea I was finally able to get the adults to eat cut talapia after having them for almost 2 years.

 The smaller ones are still babies, only about 3 inches. I have one of the adults loaned out to a friend to see if he can breed with his. Before that I hadn't tried. I didn't have them in a tank with live plants etc... Waiting to do a natural scape in the tank I'm setting up.

That's a nice tank.  Having a big tank and breeding redfin pickerel in it has been a dream of mine for a while now.  I'd be interested to hear if you or your friend have any success.
