I was very exited to stumble on this site and have really enjoyed reading the content. I was born and raised In Chicago. I lived there for 25 years and just recently moved to Asheville NC. I've fished my whole life and enjoy exploring and collecting. I got into fish keeping about 5 years ago. I was never into tropical fish, instead I was drawn to native fish. At the moment I have 2 pairs of redfin pickerel. One pair I've had for 3 years and the other a few months. I also have a 3 year old alligator snapper. I have a 280 gal tank I'll be setting up soon to house my pickerel. I also plan on trying to collect some smaller bass species for it maybe shadow, rock or redeye among others. I look forward to talking with others on here.

Welcome!   Asheville area has a wonderful diversity of fish species.  See Scott Smith's ncfishes.com.  He is "zooxanthellae" on this forum.

Welcome, I think redfin/grass pickerel are one of the best native fish out there. They have all of the cool Esox attributes without the size. I have been able to get them on frozen shrimp as a convenient part of their diet. Helps fill in the gaps between live feeds. Makes them a bit easier to keep.

Welcome. I am from Charlotte and live in Waynesville, about twenty minutes from Asheville. I tend to get out a lot and mainly microfish and snorkel, but I'd be glad to show you some locations with some variety around the area. My email is aldridge0321@gmail.com and feel free to hit me up anytime.

Welcome, I'm really interested in redfin pickerel as well.  Have you seen any breeding activity in the either of the two pairs?

Yea I agree, I love them. I plan to make them the focal point of my big tank. I'm hoping to also set up a tank with some Redfin that are found in more acidic waters. The ones I've seen have beautiful dark contrasting colors and seem to be larger. Yea I was finally able to get the adults to eat cut talapia after having them for almost 2 years.

The smaller ones are still babies, only about 3 inches. I have one of the adults loaned out to a friend to see if he can breed with his. Before that I hadn't tried. I didn't have them in a tank with live plants etc... Waiting to do a natural scape in the tank I'm setting up.

Here's a pic of my big tank. Just ordered plumbing supplies. I'm hoping to fill it and start scaping this weekend.

That's a nice tank.  Having a big tank and breeding redfin pickerel in it has been a dream of mine for a while now.  I'd be interested to hear if you or your friend have any success.
