How deep does a water garden need to be for a cooler layer to form at the bottom? I was considering getting a 40 gallon tuff stuff water trough for a water garden if my landlord does not permit the 110 gallon one I desire, but it's only 13 inches deep...wanted to know if this was deep enough to safely keep fish without frying them. Thanks :)

My 10-inch deep wading pool is noticeably cooler on the bottom, but the more depth you have, the longer it will stay tolerably cool.  With prolonged heat, eventually the bottom layer will over-heat too (or oxygen will be depleted).

If you are in zone 5 as mentioned in another post, you should be fine if you avoid direct afternoon sun, put some plants in and stock the appropriate heat tolerant fish species.

That said, there's a chance it will freeze solid if you get a cold winter which we have had lately.

Thanks! I will tear it down in the winter to keep it from freezing solid
