It's 39 F here in Ohio and since it's too cold(and the river too high) to wade and seine and my minnow trap ineffective, I have been kept away because of these factors. Not anymore. I put together a fine mesh net and extended it with a metal broom handle so I have about a 5' reach not including my arm and it worked perfectly for catching minnow fry from the bank while the river was high and fast. I must have caught at least 40 spotfin shiner and chub fry with my prize being another male fantail darter. This will keep my madtom and green sunfish in food for a few weeks and adds another fantail to the one I already have. They're both males, so there's bound to be some disagreements....
Fine mesh nets work great in the colder months!
