One of the newest fantails that I caught today. Good, dark coloration and well defined barring. Seems like the darkness level of the barring varies from fish to fish. Oscar the Grouch fantail's barring is light to medium unless he's aggravated and then 2 of the other fantails I caught today have almost no barring at all. Are the females lighter without barring?

Trautman, author of "Fishes of Ohio" split Ohio's fantail darters into barred and striped. I don't believe this split was ever widely accepted, but the different patterning is fairly evident. I believe males show more pattern.

Interesting concept and I'd like to read this. I think that you can tell that I've gotten really "hooked" on darters... :biggrin:
