I was out today and caught this shiner and another minnow below. Is the first one a silver or brookside? I don't think it's an emerald as those aren't listed in the Olentangy river fish diversity list by ODNR. Is the second fish a stoneroller?

Anyhow, the river has dropped down to it's normal shallow level and I think everything moved out into deeper pools where it won't freeze as I was in the same spot where last week I caught over a dozen darters and 35 fry. All I caught today were these two fish and found a complete ladies fishing rod and reel. The rod seems to be perfect after I scrubbed all of the slime and algae off of it. The reel? It's hosed. Been in the river at least a year.

Nope, but the second is a central stoneroller.

First one might be a Cyprinella.  2nd fish i agree is stoneroller.

Pay close attention to a good photo of a silver shiner (Notropis) and a spotfin shiner (cyprinella) Look at the scale shape and arrangement. Once you key into the differences, It will help you get your ID's down to genus. Shiners still won't be easy, but it will help a great deal.
