I’m getting either a 20 long or a 29 gallon, the goal is low Maintenance nearly 100% biotope. I was thinking using rock, sand and wood from the lake. I cannot use water from the lake as that is illegal to use, the water will be tap water. I’m thinking about using hornwort or a similar plant as the only plant in the tank. For filtration I’m thinking an aquaclear 50 or maybe 2? Maybe a sponge filter too? I was hoping to have a rock bass and maybe some minnows. Here are the fish that I seem are appropriate in my tank size found In Lake Bemidji: bluegill, hybrid sunfish, pumpkinseed, rock bass, banded killifish, common shiner, finescale dace, golden shiner, Iowa darter, Johnny darter, logperch, mimic shiner, spottail shiner.

Why is lake water illegal to take? Sounds ridiculous.

I myself have a 29 gallon myself and I keep in it the following;

.2 green sunfish.

.2 silver shiners.

.1 spotfin shiner.

.1 stonecat madtom.

.5 fantail darters.

.5 banded darters.

.5 rainbow darters.

.3 Johnny darters.

.1 western blacknosed dace.

.3 central stonerollers.

I am pretty much at my limit and as the sunfish get bigger, they'll eventually have to be removed as sunfish, rock bass, bluegills get too big for this sized tank unless you keep only 1 of them.

Never heard that law before. They are always making new ones, so not surprised.

I would get the minnows, shiners, killi's and darters established and up to a decent size. Then if you are still craving a sunfish, start with a small individual. Bluegill and pumpkinseed are less piscivorous than rock bass and greengill. I haven't heard of anyone pellet training rock bass, so that is something to factor in. Greengill are probably not a good choice for a community tank. They eat a ton, grow fast, and are very food aggressive. They will take pellets though.

I was maybe thinking of doing a sort of slack water tank with 3 Banded killis, an orange spotted sun fish and Johnny or Iowa Darters. I would have to look hard for the fish but it shouldn’t be too bad, right?

That sounds pretty doable.

Well I got a 10 gallon and I’m deciding between sticklebacks or white clouds. Are sticklebacks can be feed frozen food right?0ca12fee3eadf132b0033e6c53f0acab.jpg079d7279f957a374c66df039a6c0ced9.jpg
