Just wanted to introduce myself. I've never kept fish in any serious aquarium aside from the random goldfish as a child. I've been hoping to start one soon as I have always enjoyed fish. I do fish for sport and harvest but I often find myself just looking at the fish below my kayak for hours when the fishing is slow. I have a ton of questions that I'm sure will be answered in other post but I want to get this right as quick as possible so I don't kill fish out of ignorance. I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you and starting this new hobby.

Glad to have you here.  There are a ton of good experiences here and people willing to share their knowledge.

Keeping natives is not really any harder than keeping any other fish.

Keeping native fish is EASIER than keeping any other fish !!!!

Or harder.

Depends of what kinds of fish you wanna keep.

It's always fun though. You learn and know a lot more about the behaviors/habitat/co-residents of fish you get via an expedition to a wet place outdoors than you do from an expedition to the pet store.

(Not to lose perspective: all fish are/were native to somewhere.)

Welcome aboard! As a fellow Ohioan, we have plenty of various and beautiful fish species to choose from. The Olentangy river where I get my fish from has a good abundance of shiners, chubs, colorful darters, sunfish, bass and many others. It's so much more fun(and educational) to wade in and catch your fish yourself than to get them from a pet store.

For me, keeping native fish is easy and they don't need those expensive heaters and so forth. The only thing you have to do is get them acclimated to various foods that they've never had before. All of my darters, shiners and other fish love frozen blood worms and Mysis shrimp.
