Hey guys(& gals) I've been lurking around this site for about 4 years now gathering information on certain natives (specifically from the etheostoma genus) & never gave any kind of greeting until now 😁. My knowledge on darters is quite great so I'll be able to answer (most if not all) newbies questions about keeping darters. Also I'll post pictures/videos of my aquariums every now an then.

Welcome aboard. Please do jump in and give input. I think most of us have kept some darters, but few have cracked the code. Let's hear some of your experiences.

Welcome aboard from another BIG darter fan! That's all I have in my tank are the Etheostoma species. Rainbows, banded, Johnny and fantail. Hope to hear some of your experiences with these fish.

For sure.  I've been keeping darters for years and years, and still have problems.....

Josh Blaylock, what problems are you encountering with keeping darters, and what species?

Mostly feeding issues, a lot of wasting away due to difficulty acclimating to foods.

Tbh I've never really had that problem (well maybe a lil with my stippled darters) but all the others where real easy to get going on frozen food.

@Josh:

Interesting. It took me about 2 days to get my darters acclimated to frozen blood worms and Mysis shrimp. Perhaps their issues could be because of species and diets? I have rainbows, bandeds, fantails and Johnnies with all 4 species acclimating very quickly. I put in 3 blood worm cubes a day at one time and between the darters, spotfin shiners, sunfish and others, those cubes vanish within minutes. I typically feed the shiners, stonerollers and bluntnose minnows flake food before I feed the darters so it leaves more for them, but the shiners are gluttonous pigs.

Keep trying. Might also try other foods like grindle worms, black worms and finely diced nightcrawlers. The last one, finely diced nightcrawlers isn't for the squeamish....
