Today I have noticed that two of my Lepomis fish in the tank--a Bluegill and a Pumpkinseed--start to have pelvic fin spasms for around 2 seconds occasionally.

Is there an explanation for this action? Need some insight on this.

Sounds like flirtation. Just a guess.

My green sunfish does it once in awhile, and the greens I have had in the past have done it. Perhaps it's like when fish "flash", they have an irritant that they cannot scratch, so they rub to relieve the itch. Perhaps even small muscle spasms. Could be a minor itch or spasm with their fin muscles. My green doesn't do it very often, but when he does do it, it typically lasts a couple of seconds.

Interesting, I'll try to look for anything that is different when they do have those spasms vs. times when they don't

Keep an eye on them, it could even be a tiny parasite on them. More than likely not, but just about anything might cause it. I get tiny involuntary muscle spasms in my legs sometimes, lasts a few seconds and goes away. Could be the same thing.
