Out catching fry today at the quarry and I netted some things that I really didn't want. Anyone know what these aquatic nasties are? First one, clear jelly tubes. Not frog eggs or any other kind of eggs, but long tube things with faint rings. Some kind of amoeba? Brain eating amoeba? If so, I am safe... Nothing to eat.

Second is this handsome walking stick-like insect that appears to breathe out of it's butt. About 3 3/4" long. Nasty thing I didn't want to touch. Anyone know what these are?

Thanks

Chris

Thank you Matt,

I forgot to take my good camera with me today so I'll get better photos tomorrow or Tuesday of the jelly things. Caught a few more of the water scorpions. Nasty looking critters. Seems like they're harmless to humans but to inverts and fry, they're death.

Thanks

Chris

The jelly tubes might be midge eggs or cranefly eggs. Water scorpions are cool to keep.

Could be. I just cannot get a good photo of the jelly-eggs. As for the water scorpions, nope, nope, nope. Hate bugs. This thing can easily get out and they fly. Hate to wake up with one sitting on my face. Granted, they're probably harmless to humans, but um.... Nope. [-(

Are the jelly things nymph husks maybe? Shed exoskeleton.

Next time I go over to get some fry, I'll take my better camera and a white lid to photograph them on.
