Are male crossopterum fins always that beat up? That was all I ever observed on a few occassions and from what I've seen in other pictures. The same goes for a few other of the Catanotus species. Just that aggressive in their nest gaurding and maintenance?

I think that you are right and male-male interactions is the cause. I guess it is hard being a buck male spottail!
