We have a limited number of "Snorkeling the Hidden Rivers of Southern Appalachia" available for sale on the NANFA website: http://www.nanfa.org/cart.shtml#guide

This book was written by our very own Casper Cox and is a companion to the HIDDEN RIVERS movie that many of you are probably already aware of.

The Guide offers everything you would need to know to get started snorkeling with our native fishes, including a guide to some specific locations and the specific fish you are likely to see.  It is also filled with photographs from these locations and their fishes.

There are only 25 copies of these being sold through the NANFA wesite so act quickly to get your copy.  These were donated to NANFA so the full price is going to NANFA as a donation.

I ordered one!  If Casper put it together then it is going to be entertaining and informative!

Thank you Bruce.

:)

I think they turned out pretty nice.  I did focus on making it informative and entertaining.  This is my 3rd printing and i have tweaked nearly everything to my satisfaction.  Fritz, Bruce and Konrad, all 3 of them, edited this version, enhancing it even more.  Myself and Jeremy have worked on it multiple times, and reaching out to others during the process.  I have one deliberate misspelling.   :)  And a few oddities.

The Snorkel Guide focuses on several aspects, including...

7 sites and how to find others with 13 more noted.

Species likely encountered.

Proper gear.

Safety.

Environmental concerns.

Lots of photos from Jeremy and Dave from Freshwaters Illustrated / Hidden Rivers and myself.

And quite a bit more...

I just received another printing today, packed and mailed 10 copies this afternoon and just finished packaging 39 for mailing tomorrow morning.

We sold out of the 2nd printing during the November 2019 film tour.  I got these today, just in time for the holidays.

Not to get too far off topic, but I've seen that Hellbender picture several times now.  Did you watch that it for a while?  Did it manage to get that watersnake down?!

Great job on the publication, too.  Looks awesome.

The Hidden Rivers facebook page says the snake escaped.  But given the strength of hellbender jaws, I'm guessing it may have died later from damage to the spine and organs.

On page 20, site 2 of the Snorkel Guide, which is the Hiwassee River, i go into detail about Hellbenders and this particular event.
Here is a bit i cut and pasted which may answer your questions...

...North America's largest salamander reaching lengths of 24 inches or more.
David Herasimtschuk was honored with an international first place award in London for this stunning photo.  By the way, the Northern Water Snake got away, a bit too much for this Devil Dog.
When the Hiwassee does rise, I relocate to...

I delivered many packages of Snorkel Guides and
NANFA T-Shirts over during this week .

If you want either by Christmas i urge you to order now.  Your purchase supports NANFA.  Visit the NANFA Store at...

The Tennessee River Basin Network ( TRBN) will be holding a virtual meeting, September 15 and 16, this Covid Year 2020.

Last year i was awarded a $5000. grant which Jeremy Monroe and i decided to apply to the creation of a snorkel guide to compliment the film Hidden Rivers.

The folks at TRBN asked me to make a short introductory video describing the beginnings of the Snorkel Guide.

You can watch it here...

We have sold nearly 500 copies and i will be doing a 4th printing in the next few weeks.

You can still order a copy through nanfa.org or watch the film by contributing to freshwatersillustrated.org

The next issue of American Currents will have a review of the Snorkel Guide by Donald Orth and Appalachian Voices will as well, though they have gone digital with Covid concerns.

Snorkel season is done except for the hardy.

But it is the gift giving Holiday Season.

In addition to the goodies at the NANFA store Freshwaters Illustrated is offering some holiday specials.
