A friend of mine caught about ten of these in a small spring fed pond in North Florida, just south of the GA line. What species is it? Thanks.

Dollar would be my guess.

I agree with Matt.  Dollar sunfish - and a whopper at that!  Most dollars I come across in Georgia rarely exceed 3 inches or so.  Although, I've raised some in aquaria up to nearly 6 inches.
