Announcing the first round of the NANFA Fishmas OnLine Book Auction.

 

COVID caused us to cancel the convention, so many of you may be short of Fishmas presents for the upcoming holidays. We decided to auction off some awesome fish books. These are all books from the personal collection of Dr. Rudy Arndt, longtime friend of NANFA who passed away a few years ago and left an extensive collection of fish (and other) books to us.

 

You can bid on these by going to https://www.aquabid.com/ and looking under the book section for anything by the seller Nanfabookauction. All proceeds go to NANFA.

 

Right now we are auctioning the following titles:

 

American Darters

 

Handbook of Darters

 

Fishes of Ohio

 

Fishes of Tennessee

 

Fishes of Wisconsin

 

Fishes of Kentucky

 

Freshwater Fishes of North Carolina (author signed)

 

Fishes of the Bahamas

 

Fishes of Chesapeake Bay

 

Zoogeography of North American Freshwater Fishes

This is a great idea, Michael.

 

Will there be an opportunity to get a crack at the "other" books? I know Rudy really liked "herptiles," and my wife and I might be interested in a couple of amphibian and reptile books. Perhaps a listing of books with a "make an offer" option and a right of refusal by NANFA. Maybe there are similar sites to Aquabid for Herp folks, which would probably be a better option.

 

We might be interested in other books as well. I know Rudy was pretty eclectic in his interests. I enjoyed him at Tate's Hell several years ago.

I agree Phil!  I like the idea of the virtual book auction and has the potential for more related offerings.

Yes, there will be more opportunities.  As you know, we normally do this during the auction at the convention.  We just decided to give this a try.  These first ten books were ones that we thought would grab people's attention.  If we do well financially with this, we will be doing more.

Looked like y'all did OK. Prices weren't as high as I thought they might go, but then I've been surprised (and a little saddened) at how cheap some items have gone at in-person auctions.

I don't know exactly what was expected but I think we got over $350 by the end... so not bad... and all to the cause of supporting NANFA and Native Fish and our grant programs and such.

 

Oh, and we have some more books for sure, so we will have to evaluate with the rest of the BOD, but there may be more to come.

All of Rudy's herp books were donated to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and the NC Herp Society.  There were some good ones.  But I felt that I could only "handle" 13 boxes of fishy books.

13 more titles were put of for auction this evening. I am not going to re-type out all the titles here, but there are some real good ones again in this mix.

That's fine Fritz. It sounds like the herp books went to a good place. I was just interested in making sure that they were not forgotten or disposed of in a way where their value was not appreciated.

I went up there too late for a final goodbye but I was able to save 23 boxes of fish and herp books.  And the executor and his sister agreed to donate them to people who would appreciate them.  Now I have 13 boxes of books in my bedroom.
