Hi all,

 

New to this forum as a user but have been following this forum as a reader for a while. Setting up a 20 gallon long tank for my university. Tank will hopefully be all native fish. The tank is a 20 gallon long with gravel, sand, some stones, manzanita wood, jungle val and anacharis, an aquaclear 30, and an 80 gph pump at one end. What are some native stocking options for this tank? Ideally it would have a couple species in it, but I am open to anything. If there aren't any good CA natives for a tank like this, I may opt to just get some native-looking fish like fathead minnows or feeder guppies to put in it. I have included an image of the tank set up right now with some white cloud minnows.

Tank looks great, but you might not be able to do much with Cali natives... check your local regulations... you might have to road trip "back east"... my recommendation would be my local yellowfin shiners or some of the other similar species.

I have a similar tank, and my swamp guppies feel completely fine there.

Like Michael said, CA natives are probably off limits legally, but there are plenty of other cool species you could house in there. If you have a lid on it or could put one on it my go-to group to recommend are Fundulus spp. aka the topminnows/killifish. Blackstripe/blackspotted topminnows (F. notatus/olivaceous) and plains killifish (F. zebrinus) are both great species are are very easy to care for. They also can be very bold and will learn to eat from your hand. Golden topminnows (F. chrysotus) are great too but there is usually aggression between them which has the potential to be problematic.

If you're able to provide frozen and or live foods they are quite a few darters that would make a nice home for.

Just realized I skipped over where you said this was for a university, if you're able to get them legally lahontan redsides are very nice CA natives. California killifish would make for a cool tank as well although since they're more of an estuary dwelling species they may need salt in the water

I'd go with some out of state: cyprinella, hydrophlox, and or dace maybe a few darters  in a river style tank. Here's a video of one I just set up last week.
