Had a friend describe a fish he caught in Cedar creek, Frederick County VA. Said he caught it spinner fishing in 1993 for trout. From the description it didn't sound like anything that should be there. He said he had it mounted and would send me a picture. He said even the taxidermist didn't even know what it was. Imagine my surprise when I saw this picture.

Let him know it appears to be an Oscar and was probably released when it outgrew its tank!!!

Definitely an Oscar that was released. Sad, but it happens. Cool post.

Oscar for sure. Common in the aquarium trade and they get pretty big. Probably outgrew its tank and someone released it. I doubt it would survive the winters in that part of the country, but down in South Florida there are established populations is several canal systems. I think I caught two or three in this video. Fast forward to 2:40 to see the first one.
