Hey everybody,

 

I am writing hoping to get some insight and advise from anyone familiar with the Jacks Fork river in MO or the Mountain View, MO area. I am going on a weeklong trip starting Oct 24th to the Mountain View area and I have invested in a 5mm thick wetsuit, after jealously seeing you guys snorkeling all the time, and am hoping to get some snorkeling in (I know from reading that snorkeling season is basically over but this is the only time I've got!)

 

I'm from Texas and used to water that isn't so cold, so after reading some posts here I was convinced investing in a 5mm wetsuit was something I needed to do for snorkeling in the southeast which I hope to do more of in the future. I am hoping this suit will be ok for this time of year in MO... but in all honestly I am not sure! 

 

I guess I am hoping for any suggestions of good snorkeling locations. I have a few days to escape the craziness and really want to see some cool spots. I'm doing as much research as I can to make the most of the trip, so any additional advice would be much much appreciated! I am hoping to see some cool fishes

My favorite time to snorkel is during winter when a little ice in in the water. Water can be exceptionally clear and fish allow very close approach. Just look for pools with a fair amount of structure like provided by tree roots and larger rocks.

Spring is the best always.

 

A 5mm will be ok.  Thicker becomes difficult to put on and is rigid.  Double layering suits is always an option.  Be sure and add a hood, very important.  Sun shining on your black wetsuit back will help warm you.

 

The Ozarks are awesome.  I suggest an AR and MO Gazateer.  Look for State Parks and such.  Beautiful waters.  You will enjoy!

 

Consider my Jacks which joins the Conasauga River for an East TN snorkel days!

Thanks for the advice! It ended up being VERY chilly but still awesome. I am going to try to get there next year in the Spring. Maybe I can upload some (not the best) photos soon. 

 

I want to get to TN in the spring too!
