Caught this short-faced guy a few years back. He did well despite his Pug-faced appearance. From an introduced/invasive population in Lovettsville, Va.

Nothing special. Just sparking conversation. Always neat to find oddballs that make it in the wild.

He is so cool!  That creek is right across the river from one of my favorites :)  Maybe his pug face and sharp nose allow him a genetic advantage when chasing prey in rock crevices?  I say that because most rainbow darters have kind of more of a rounded off snout, while his is much pointier, albeit shorter.

Absolutely a gorgeous fish! Still no luck catching a male rainbow like that. I did catch a small O-spot sunfish and a baby warmouth yesterday, but the river isn't raging high enough to push the darters close to the shoreline yet.

Happy, safe and legal collecting.
