I posted several months ago about catching two redfin pickerels in our local stream. They've been doing great until this week. One of them seems terribly sick.

He hasn't eaten for several days and just floats in one spot most of the day. This morning, we noticed several patches on his right side where it's white and outlined with a reddish/rust color. Anyone know what this could be? We'd hate to lose him!

What are your water parameters? Also, what are you feeding them?

Well, as far as the water situation goes, we've just kept them in a tank that used to have goldfish. They've been in this tank since November. We've really never done anything to the water, except kept a filter running.

Unfortunately, we've been feeding them feeder fish from the pet store (goldfish). Occasionally, they'll get fish from the stream, which I *think* are darters.

They are basically being poisoned if you haven't done any water changes. Pickerel are pretty dirty eaters and don't quite digest their food fully. You probably need to do 50% water changes daily for a week with 1tbsp salt (aquarium/kosher w/o additives) per 5 gallons. After which do 25% every 1-2 weeks, depending on water parameters. Get a test kit in the mean time so you can figure out how often water changes are necessary.

Since we are an Outdoor Education Center, these fish were put on display for educational purposes. I am not too sure that the speciliasts here are going to do all that. Maybe it's best to put them back into the stream.

Don't put them back in the stream. If you want to get rid of them, let me know where you are at and I'll come pick them up.

I'd have to check with the boss first. He's out in the woods right now.
