Hi everybody,

I have a 75 gallon tank which I'm preparing for a sunfish when this bitter winter ends. However, I have a trio of cats, and one of them weighs 25 pounds and is part serval, so I don't trust him with glass tops. This is the biggest tank I own and unfortunately no one seems to make proper hoods for it like are available for smaller tanks. I was thinking about making my own canopy, but then I'm a little lost when it comes to lighting. Are there any lights that are designed for being mounted to a wooden canopy, or how could I go about adding lights to it? I don't want any big gaps in the canopy if possible, except maybe at the back where it will be against the wall and my cat can't reach.

Thanks!

I have LEDs inside a wooden canopy style topper that sits on my 75... works great.  The back is opened, but I could have made it closed if I was worried about a cat.

Are they suspended from the top, or are they directly attached to the wood?

Its a DIY unit with the LEDs mounted onto an old piece of a fluorescent light (just the reflective white sheet metal) the LEDs are mounted to the metal and the metal is mounted directly to the wood... the power supply is also mounted to the wood, but off to the side.  Here's a pic.  To be fair this is about the 4th or fifth version that I have made and the best so far.

wow the pic looks really small... here is a link to the full size version in the gallery archive.

I have a glass top (2 piece set) and use a Fluval Planted light for mine.  The light sits on top of the tank on metal end stands that adjust to the size of the tank.

My cat has totally ignored my tank after a brief investigation and some water bottle squirts. Not saying that this will work for ALL cats, but mine is totally uninterested in my tank.

I use a Fluval plant 3.0 LED strip on my 75G tank. It's got great looking light, powerful, and has a lot of flexibility in programming the schedule and light settings. If you want to get fancy you can get some mounting brackets to increase the height.
