Hi all, I was wondering what tank size is suitable to house a small group of creek chubs for life?

Hi Ad4m.
Creek chubs can get BIG. I have caught 10" chubs before. They are not community fish and will eat whatever fits in their huge mouths, hence why they're not recommended for tanks with smaller fish (lost several beautiful male banded darters to chubs). That said, how many is a "small" group? From my limited experience, but my knowledge of how big they get, I would suggest, in my humble opinion, the minimum tank size I would buy would be a 40 gallon or bigger tank. They aren't going to stay small for long and that way you can add other species of fish that get big enough that they won't be eaten.

I'll echo what Fleendar said about mouth and body size. We had a 220 gal community tank that housed "leftovers" from some mussel host studies. Pretty soon, the tank was nothing but six, 12" long creek chub torpedoes that ate anything that fell into the tank. For life, I would venture to say a minimum would be 75 gallon for a "group" of creek chubs. But everyone's idea of a group is different.

Thank you for the replies. I was considering a 75 gallon, and maybe have a group of 2-3, but if its guaranteed they will get to 10 inches, I may have to think of something else. I don't actually have a tank yet, I'm just brainstorming ideas, and thought creek chubs were kinda neat.

Creek chubs are guaranteed to get big. I like them because they eat whatever you drop into the tank, but you had better have fish that are bigger and spinier than they are if you want a community tank. In my experience, they do well with sunfish except for the green sunfish. The green sunfish has a very large mouth.
