Ive never kept native fish before and Im looking to get into it. I want to have a nice looking tank with interesting fish that fit in a 10 gallon. Any ideas? I would also like fish that I could purchase, as I dont really want to collect my own.

Thanks,
Jack

A small group of darters (4 or 5) as long as theyre a smaller species

Pygmy sunfish/pygmy killifish/least killifish colonies in a heavily planted tank

Trio of golden/starhead/blackstripe/blackspotted/banded topminnows

Trio of flagfish

If you're alright not seeing the fish very often, one madtom could be fun. I had a single margined madtom in a 10gal for a while and greatly enjoyed it, even though it only emerged at night or for food at dusk.

Coming from the Northern reaches, I kept about 4 darters and 3 spotfin shiners or bluntnose minnows successfully. I also had 2 crayfish as well to clean the bottom up. However, crayfish are notorious escape artists. You have to duct tape the open areas of your canopy. From time to time in Ohio I have caught some black stripe topminnows and they're a nice addition to have as well.

Best in keeping.
