I had an hour or so to kill the other evening, so I picked a spot on the map I had never been, and headed down to see if it had any potential for darters or anything.
Yes...it does..
It's a really beautiful little stream..I don't think it even has a name, but it deserves one! One of the reasons I enjoy this is that rather like trout fisherman..it takes me to places not many other people will see, at least from the vantage point I do!
Here are the two Rainbow darters I photographed(male and female)...sorry about the pics, I am still new at this aspect of it! I don't have a holding tank for them to take pics...so I did the best I could.

Here is (I think) a blacknose dace, with some great color!

Here is a photo of the stream I was on, a fitting place to find such brilliant little jewels:

Excellent photos! Beautiful creek! That male rainbow has somewhat unique coloration. The vertical blue bars on the mid section are reduced almost to blotches. Wonder if that is characteristic of that "population" or if it was just a unique individual. Probably they are isolated and somewhat inbred or divergent. Cool!

Where exactly is this stream? I live in Jenison, MI and have been looking for some new places to try out!

I went back this evening and sampled this stream again(looking for male rainbows, figured that if anyplace around here had conditions that would allow them to retain color year round, this might be it!). As far as I can tell, the fish I got tonight all have this same pattern, with the stripes mid body reduced to large blotches. I've also noticed that they are VERY dark, and have a blue/green sheen over them. I hope they retain some aspect of their brilliant color once they are in my tank, although I suspect that with the much lighter substrate and rock work(more to tan's and browns, then the black of the stream they came from) they will lighten up considerably, if not totally lose their color.
