just this afternoon my friend nate and i took a trip to the providence dam to look for sucker mouth minnows. although we came up empty handed with the sucker mouths (does anyone know any good places to find them?) we did catch a few surprises. on the south end of the dam we found literally 100 or so long nose gar spawing. we came up with 4 at one time in our 4x8 net. it was absolutly amazing. if you have the chance within the next two weeks or so get out there and take a look, it will be worth the drive. we then moved up this little riffle and are net started to take of in the opposite direction. at first we figured we probably had just ran into a few spawning carp. however we lifted up our net to see a giant flathead catfish that measured in at almost 4 feet long. at the moment i do not have my camera to load up the pics but i will post them tomorrow to add some proof to my fish tale. anyone else have any monsters come up in the seine?

Do the trout in hatchery growout ponds count? Because if so those would be it. If they don't then I suppose the largest would be a chain pickerel I once caught that was about a foot long.

Wow, that's big! I bet it gave you a time?

I caught some pike or musky minnows once, but I don't remember how big they were :?

Those gar spawns are AWESOME. With the low water, I wonder which all riffles they're going on this year. I've found them at Side Cut, Miltonville, Weir, Otsego, Van Tassel and now you've completed the public access circuit :) Aren't the oranges and greens you see amazing?

We've nabbed some pretty good sized channel cats in the Maumee, but I have to imagine the biggest fish would be a carp. So somewhere below 10 lbs. Sounds like you guys nabbed a real doozy. Will Gary let you enter it in the catfish contest? ;)

Might have to go out with the video camera this weekend and see if I can't get a cluster of those gar on film.

todd, if you and phil want to go out to the providence dam sometime this weekend and video tape/ photograph these gar spawning id be up for the trip out there or anyone else for that matter. we might have to watch to weather because indiana is suppost to get alot of rain which should raise the water level over the weekend.

We have caught a good sized bowfin before as well as a 2 ft long or so spottail bass (red drum) from an estuary seine.

D, when you say "spottail bass" are you talking peacock bass (whichis actually a cichlid I think)? Just tryign to get the i.d. right in my head.

Oh, and my answer would have to be the longnose gar that Casper and I and several others drug up last year at Seinerama II... he was over three feet, maybe four, maybe I'm a fisherman... but big and toothy!

Mine- last year during night, we'd catch smaller (around a foot or less) pike, and a few days ago I came up with a huge perch out in the middle of nowhere. Haven't really used it to catch larger fish yet. When we go fishing for channel cats, etc. I could take the seine with and see what I catch :)

that is simply amazing,
i would guess it was in there eating the eggs from the gar spawn?

do you think perhaps it was sick? I would think a fish that size would rip the net all up.

Make your pics smaller and you should be able to upload more.

Never mind the by catch photos lets see the gar...
We have them assembling right now on the Detroit river.. So far this morning I counted a good 45 of them all in full spawning glory with the coming rains it is going to be awesome in a couple of days...

Our fish tend to spawn at night so I'm staking the pole and spending the night on the river with them this Monday. They should be fully spawning by this time. Hopefully I can also get some good video and still shots of this annual event.

when we where out in the river i did not have my camera with me so i was unable to actually get video of the gar. but if the weather holds up for me tomorrow evening ( there also doing there thing late in the evening/ night here) ill be out at the dam again but with my camera this time. it is definetly amazing to see them all spawning in one area. best of luck on the water, are you also going to be viewing long nose (L. osseus)?

Same fish paoutlaw L. osseus...

I have only seen one or two L. oculatus from time to time. The Longnose spawning run to me is a bit like some annual ritual of sorts... I call it my personal spring celebration. In a way it is my Easter, Christmas, memorial day and Thanksgiving combined. But then I'm a bit nutty and love these fish just a bit more than most. I always go out and "commune" with them, watch them, look over them and just plain enjoy them when this time comes.

I've actually done this for over 20 years...(Straight jacket may be needed by now :P )
