Hello,

 

I just got a 75 gallon tank, and hoping to catch some maryland species such as minnows, darters, dace, etc. I can travel anywhere in the state. Anyone have location suggestions, or what time of year I could start looking? 

 

I have a largish dipnet. Anyone have success catching darters with dipnets, or do I need a seine?

You can start as soon as you can tolerate being in the water.  The fish are out there.  I have seen some of the brightest darter coloration here in North Georgia in Late February and Early March.  And in small enough streams (six feet wide and ankle to shin deep) a dip net works just fine for darters if you can see the substrate habitat.  It takes some patience but you can do just fine with a dipnet.  Personally, I like to use a seine for shiners and chubs and such (which I really like in a 75).

Seines work best for darters in my experience. I've caught a bunch of different species in MD - tessalated, rainbow, fantail, greenside.

I've had a lot of luck with small streams. I go collecting with a bunch of other people that live in Maryland sometimes - let me know if you might be interested in joining the next time we go.

Yep, I've caught blacknose dace, swallowtail shiners, creek chubs, creek chubsuckers, and 1 tessellated darter. Hoping to catch a few more darters. Any case, happy to join, you can reach me at thekeyert@gmail.com
