I managed to get out in the water for awhile on May 23rd at a place called "Sheldrake Point" on Cayuga Lake. My ultimate goal was to find madtoms, particularly brindled madtoms who I have collected there in the past. I did not find any madtoms but it as a pretty productive day all the same.

Species list
Lepomis spp. (bluegill or pumpkinseed)
Rock Bass
Mottled Sculpins
Tessellated Darters
Bluntnose Minnows

My method wasen't very productive. I basically lifted rocks and moved my dipnet quickly underneath them. I tore my net all to hell, I really need to by one of those Cumings dipnets with the mesh inside the frame.

Some location shots...

Found these two dead rock bass. The largest rock basses I have ever seen, wish I had a ruler. It's a shame they were dead and not biting my fishing line instead.

Sculpin eggs. There were TONS of eggs in this location, probably in 1 out of every three rocks I lifted. I took measures to make sure I did not lift them out of the water or detach them from the rocks.

Jonah's pimping his wares

We do a lot of kick-dipnetting in the streams we go to. Lifting up big rocks in a dipnet is hell on the net though.

Are those sores on the rock bass?

On the larger live rockbass? Yes, they are. He wasen't doing to well when I found him. Between him and the two dead ones I can't say I wasen't a little worried. The two young rockbass I caught looked fine.

As for dipnets I think I want one with a wooden handle, that's why I want a Cumings. I haven't decided though but I'm gonna have to get one soon. My current net is less then a year old and already mostly held together with fishing line. My last one was a butterfly net from Dicks.

If you want a Perfect Dipnet with a wooden handle, get the Net Head Only. You can then attach a handle of any material as long as it is one inch in diameter. Round stock works just as well in the octagonal yoke as does octagonal stock. However the octagonal stock will not fit into a one inch round yoke, but that won't be an issue with our ocatagonal yokes! http://jonahsaquariu...m/netdipnet.htm OK, no more commercial talk. If you want more info, please message me.

I still might go with a telescoping handle, I haven't made up my mind yet. If I decide to go with one I'll let ya know. Thanks for the info though.
