Hello all, new member here. Long time aquarist. I live in Charleston SC and have kept various natives, both fresh and saltwater. Especially saltwater blennies and brackish sailfin mollies.

I'm wanting to find some native smaller catfish that would live comfortably in tanks 50-100 gallons. I've tried many times to find madtoms but all I've ever found were channel cats, white cats, and once I found what seemed to be juvenile yaqui cats in Sawmill Branch in Summerville.

Can anyone offer some suggestions on what I could be looking for and what environment?

Or, are there any other interesting bottom dwellers around here? (other than American eels and hogchokers)?

As a side note, I failed to mention that I see information now that Yaqui catfish are a western specie so I doubt that's what I found. I don't remember their details but they clearly weren't bulkheads or channel cats. They might have been blue cats. The field guide I was using said clearly that Yaqui were a SC native but I believe it was an error.

I’m sure if you strung out a 6-pack of coke cans overnight you could find some smaller catfish and might luck into a madtom.
