I and some other folks from the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology went out on another Huron River collecting excursion on Friday (6/8/07). Our proposed sampling location was behind the Dexter Cider Mill, but the water was several feet higher than we would have liked due to nearby storms. So we decided to move on to Boyden Creek, a small tributary that crosses Huron River Drive midway between Dexter and Ann Arbor.

The water there was also fairly high and murky. There were thousands of juvenile cyprinids shoaling about near the surface in the deeper areas (~3'). We did not have much luck with the seining at first, but as we moved up the creek into shallower water, we started to catch more fish. Some of the best runs we had were in were in a small concrete "trough" area at the farthest point upstream, just before the stone wall.

And some relatively good news -- I don't think we saw any zebra mussels here. Anyway, here is the list:

Fishes:
- Black bullhead, 1
- Largemouth and smallmouth bass (juv, ~1/2-3/4"), hundreds
- Green sunfish, several large and a few juveniles
- Pumpkinseed, several large
- Bluegill, 1 or 2
- Greenside darters, 2, ~3" -- male w/ very bright coloration
- Log perch (?) - 1 small
- Fathead minnows, 2 or 3
- Juvenile cyprinids, ~ 1/2", THOUSANDS
- White sucker, 2

Inverts:
- Crayfish, ~ a dozen large
- Small trichoptera in cases
- Fingernail clams
- Helgramites
