Went hand-grabbin flathead catfish this past weekend. Brought home this darlin' little 18" Flathead Catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) and several thousand eggs. My camera can't pick it up but, I can see the nearly transparent embryos wriggling around atop their yolk sacs. I was told I was lucky. Came face-to-face with a couple of copperheads. The 'lucky' part comes from not having met up with the usual gators, water moccassins, and snapping turtles.

Whoops. The "Initializing Attachments..." won't finish initializing. Sorry, no pic for this pic thread.

Sweet. I wanna go noodlin' sometime soon. I've never done it before, and it sounds like a lot of fun. At the lake we go to there are HUGE catfish, so I'm gunna try it this summer.

Is this legal in Mississippi yet? I know that it's explicitly legal in maybe 4 states, including Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee if I remember correctly. It's fine with me if people do it, I was just curious...

I know it's legal in GA, 'cause I'm looking at the GA fishing regs right now. It's legal "without the aid of any device, hook, snare, net or other artificial element and without the use of any scuba equipment, air hose or other artificial breathing apparatus." And you can only do it May 1- July 15.

Of the 8 of us that went, one is a Forestry Service constable and another is a F&W Parks and Lakes warden. I figure we were all working within the limits of the law. (they never asked to see my fishing license. But, I had it on me anyway)

Fingergepoken/Handgegrabben is pretty popular in MS - flatheads seem to be the favorite. Ouchgeyellen is pretty popular too!

Kansas just started a hand fishing season (with a few restrictions) this year.

Hand fishing, for FLATHEAD CATFISH ONLY, is legal from sunrise to sunset June 15 through Aug. 31 at two locations:

The Arkansas River from the John Mack Bridge on Broadway Street in Wichita downstream to the Kansas-Oklahoma border,

The Kansas River from its origin downstream to its confluence with the Missouri River.

A special permit ($27.15) is required in addition to a Fishing License.

Anyone hand fishing may not use hooks, snorkeling or scuba gear, or any other man-made device OR possess any fishing gear except a stringer.

Stringers may not be used until the fish are caught by hand and are at or above the surface of the water.

No man-made object — such as a barrel, box, or bathtub — may be used to attract fish.

A questionnaire shall be provided to each holder of a hand fishing permit. Each permit holder shall complete and submit the hand fishing questionnaire no later than 30 days after the close of the open hand fishing season.

I think I've lead a sheltered life, I never even thought to use a bathtub to attract fish.

Step 1. Seine shad
2. Place shad in bathtub
3. Place bathtub in water
4. Motionlessly stand over tub (wrestling stance)
5. Grab any fish that tries to steal your shad

C'mon Fundulus.....everyone knows this how you use a bathtub to attract fish

Like I said, a sheltered life. But maybe I need a new kind of kick after all.

Just for curiosity, what do they do to you if you don't submit the questionnaire?
