I'm trying to figure out a way to flush fishes out of deep pools into some sort of net downstream (I have some special seine modifications in mind). It occurred to me that there might be some sort of substance which fishes will flee from, but which does not anesthetize or harm them.

Any ideas? This would be for solo collecting.

I used to catch gobies and blennies out of holes in rocks by squirting a bit of coke or pepsi into it, while capping the hole with a small jar, it actually worked pretty well. Not sure how that will help you though

Soda water* is an anesthetic - guppy fanciers use it for that purpose. It's an idea, but that might be rather too expensive for what I have in mind.

*It is commonly known that in the South, all soft drinks are referred to as "Coke". The exception to this, however, is really backwoods southerners, who use the term "sody warter".

Tell me that you're kidding Irate.

Any "substance" used to fish isn't exactly a legal way of taking fish in my state. I guess each state is different but this sounds like a prank.

I use to have a 12 foot long seine net, and my cousins would help me catch minnows. My cousin and I held the sein in water around 3 foot deep while my other cousin ran minnows (by jumping up and down and moving around quit a bit) to us from wed beds or elsewhere. They changed the law regarding seine nets, and now it can only be a 6 foot long by 4 foot tall seine net.

I know a tribe I was watching on tv were using some type of tree root to make fish less active so they could catch them. I think it might have been harming the fish though; It was on that show "Going Tribal".

Using a m-80 seems kinda cruel :(

Nope, I'm serious. I never thought of that being illegal, since I'm not planning on using poison or anything, but merely a fish repellent. At least I don't recall running across anything in the regs about repellents. I guess I should reread them with this in mind. Assuming I find a benign, inexpensive substance that is worth looking into. I briefly considered schreckstoff, but who wants to run a bunch of minnows through the ol' CuisinArt? It just wouldn't be right. Plus it would only work on other minnows.

Tie a rope to a rock, place it upstream of the hole, take the rope down stream with you and your net. Pull the rock thru the hole and downstream to scare the fish towards the net. The rock I used was smarter than the help I had the time before! :D

Hmm, that or a variation thereof (like my shiner scoop) might actually work! Plus it would be legal.

Very interesting idea, but I am in the water enough to see how fish react to a foreign body. I cannot see how this would do anything but waste time. The fish will simply move around the rock head the other way, and your net will remain almost empty.
