Just about anything they can get their mouths around. Do you mean what do they eat out in the wild, or in captivity? In captivity, feeding it will NOT be a problem: chopped earthworms, frozen worms and shrimp, flake food, graduating to pellets, worms, fish, shrimp, etc. Getting it to stop eating will be your issue. It will outgrow a 55 easily, probably eating any/all tankmates.

Yes, in captivity. I have a few and I haven't seen them eat anything. I have chopped an eathrworm and it looks untouched at the bottom of the tank. I tried flake food for ponds and I didn't see them take any of that in either.

I am talking less than an inch long.
Live Black worms would be a good bet, live daphnia would do also. Does he have a lot of spots? I've noticed the ones in pet shops don't have many spots. Wheni was a kid I caught a channel cat in the kanawha river and it was covered with spots, it was the prettyest channel cat i had ever seen and it came out of a very badly polluted river too. It was about 6" long.
