Hey! I'm Cameron from Greeneville, Tn. I'm married with a teenage son. I've kayaked & canoed the Nolichucky R. for 10 or so years, but only recently begun keeping natives. This past Christmas we bought our son a 46 gal. bowfront, and since then we've grown to include 4 aquaria (including a 55 gal. native tank) and a 1000 gal. native pond! We all love to fish & camp along the river. This summer I bought my son a mask & snorkel, and since then all he wants to do is float around watching fish (which greatly pleases me). I look foreward to learning lots from the knowledgable folks here. Thats all for now.

Welcome. Glad to have you. You are in a great state for native fish. You may think about getting in touch with Casper Cox. He is the Tennessee Nanfa rep.

Plus, Casper is the Snorkelmeister. He has made several converts!

Welcome, I am new to NANFA also. I took my 10 year old daughter snorkling in the Ashtabula River several weeks ago. I have several (22) aquariums. I have had to reduce the amount of tanks to only 5 with fish and one with scuds because of work.

There are some great places in your area to snorkel and float. Some of my personal favs and suggestions are the Emory/Obed, French Broad, and Little rivers. There is a nice campground/canoe livery on the Little River just upstream of Maryville called River John's Landing. From there upstream to Melbourne I've seen 13 species of darters and over 40 total species, many of those are rare. If you venture farther the Hiwassee is a great snorkel, and refreshing when the water is 65 and the air is 95. The Duck is AMAZING. With the French Broad and Hiwassee always check the TVA sites. Feel free to PM me if you need information about when the water starts going up at certain places or how long it takes to get to mile X.

hum...
greenville. according to my gazeer your near johnson city. not a place i get to often but ranger bob is a good snorkeling buddy when you can get him out. he is a natuarist at bay mountain state park and you owe it to yourself and son to go meet him. that is in kingsport. what a great park to experience. he hosted a couple native fish gatherings and i had the best of times at both except when i fell through the swinging bridge into possum creek... but there are war paint shiners under that bridge!
i live in chattanooga and spend all my spare time snorkeling or looking for clear water to snorkel in. im very glad to hear that your son is enjoying it and if he stays with it he will be blessed with many wonders. get him a wetsuit, full body, at a scuba store or used sporting store. and a beanie hood. gotta have it.
call me... im in the front of each issue of american currents, and you can tie that in with a visit to the tn aquarium. tho i tell you snorkeling on a perfect day in the hiwassee, little sequatchie or conasauga will blow away any tn aquarium expereince.
:)

Casper! It's about time! Seen anything cool lately? Speaking of snorkeling to the Con. Tyler and some TTU students were scheduling a trip for the end of the month.

Nothing beats a 95 degree Tennessee day by snorkeling in a 68 degree tailwater with 2-3 meter visability.

i havent heard from this original poster... the river runner, perhaps that is what he is doing!
yes matt, ed and i ended up camping for 2 night w/ tyler and the tn tech folk, nice group. very enjoyable, excellent visibility tho kinda late in the year for good colors. i just spent the last 4 days snorkeling 4 rivers. french broad, emory, hiwassee and the conasauga. saw your snail darters at 2 locations. all were fun and got to camp a bit to w/ my son's scout troop during their river raft race on the hiwassee.
ive got 3 more trips in the works before the season is over.
so river runner... seen anything of late?

Very drunken I'm sure too. What two places were you? Campbell Island? Over by Spring Creek in the Hiwassee? Anything of note from the Emory?

This has been my busiest summer ever.
Wife now has new hardwood floors, work buddies have me helping with their home projects, etc.

The river level is lowest I've ever seen.

I did get to take my nephew out on the lake & up a clear trib over the weekend (my secret spot)
I think he had the best time of his summer. We fished, seined, netted, snorkeled, swam, paddled, & played fetch with my lab.
I hope his parents will soon forget the odor that hung over us at the end of the day. It's uncanny how decomposing plant material sturred up from streambed can smell worse than septic sewer!!
