Has a chat room been considered? I know a lot of cichlid keepers flock to the chat when they need help quickly. Waiting a day or two for someone to respond can be a bit frustrating. I know chats can be a waste on some sites, as there are other chats that are better, but I don't know of any other chats that are native fish based. Just my two cents.

The way to successfully start out with a chat room is to have a scheduled chat event. Pick a time when most people will be home. Sunday evenings are usually popular. Just make sure to mention what time zone the event is based on. Then you can advertise the event and get more people than you would from random show ups.
A 2 am- 5 am Friday and Saturday night chat might be productive too.

I was thinking about starting an #aquarium_chat a few months ago, and I thought about starting a topic about it here at the forum. I didn't know how people would respond, or that you guys would have the time...
I know a good irc network (very dependable and stable), the op's are pretty nice and helpful. That is if anyone wants to start a chat room...
I made a chat program a few years ago, but it's a resource hog (I was new to coding).
Edit: Nevermind about it, I just noticed Drews post.

Yeah, I know, but if someone else created one, then my chat room would be useless... I don't think anyone would join or stay unless some of the more knowledgeable people joined. Maybe I'm being negative...Nobody is saying don't start your own chat room - just that the forum admins don't plan on doing one themselves. If you want to do it on your own, then have at it!
Pretty easy to start a channel on the network I was talking about, but I wouldn't feel right being the admin of it (since I'm new to the forum, natives, etc...). Anyway, I'll start one today see how things go. I have to do some work this evening, but I should be back tonight.
If you are new to IRC, then you might want to use the java client(click here to join chat using the java version). When the pop-up comes up that ask you about installing something for java click yes (if you chose no just try it again).
If you know how to use IRC, then join this server: area51.slashnet.org and the channel: Nanfa. If you want a list of the servers they have. Here is their site, for more information...
If you want to register a nick name: WARNING: YOU HAVE TO GIVE THEM YOUR REAL E-MAIL ADDRESS TO REGISTER YOUR NICK. To register your nick (use the status screen not the channel screen and only do this when you have set your nick to the nick you want) (no spaces in your password or nick)type: /ns register enteryourpassword enteryourcorrectemailaddy
To identify yourself when you quit and join type: /ns identify enteryourpassword
To join a channel (the number sign has to always be in front) type: /join #channel name
Report anybody that's spamming the channel to me or creating problems, not people running the network. They don't care about drama and should only be asked to help when something is wrong. They will respond to most people by telling them to take it up with the channel admin (as they should).

There is an established (sort of) Native fish chat that is scheduled on another site every month..
On the 23rd of every month I host a Native fish and oddball predator chat session from 9 until 11 or so on Fishgeeks feel free to drop in...

I know this is an older subject, but I was thinking about this myself. Just a few minutes ago there were 22 people on (guests and members) I don't see why we couldn't have one. I think people would come. I personally would come because I can get to know you all more quickly rather than slowly typing messages. A scheduled time wouldn't be a bad idea, and I think you can get free chat applications (mind you they're not the greatest) Or if people use IRC or even Yahoo we could simply set up a chat room there and set a password for forum members only. Just a thought. Heck, I'll even moderate the IRC one if you get it. I'm knowledgeable in getting a bot in there to maintain the chat room from all my past gaming! Planetarion for the win.

I have a neurotic phobia over chat rooms and cell phones.... something about hearing disembodied voices..... the whole "Beautiful Mind" schizophrenia scenario. But each their own... you could call it "The Mander Free Zone" because I can guarantee, I won't be going there!
