...but I don't know what to put in it. It's a 55 gallon. I was thinking about putting my longears in it when they get bigger. Are there any fish I can put with them? I've heard they're pretty aggressive, and mine are starting to prove this true. I was thinking about maybe making it a breeder tank, but I want a little more variety. Do longears do well with plants? If so, are there any tankmates that do well with plants that they can get along with? Can they be kept with bluespotted sunfish?

Unless you put them in for a food source, I would leave out the bluespots. I have 2 bluespots and a longear in a 50g along with a bunch of orangethroat darters, but the sunfish are small enough to get picked on by a platy that for some reason I still have in there.
If the bluespots are bigger, it might work.....I've seen some mean longears, so be careful.

I'm definately going to put Northern longears in there. I just want a little variety in the tank, not just longears, but I want to breed them, so it might have to be a species tank anyways.

Ive found that if you keep 2 male longears in the same tank with some females, the dominant male will be so focused on harassing the other male longear that he wont bother the other fish in the tank.

Another way to keep a male longear occupied is to place a mirror against the glass. This also helps them stay more colorful, because there is always a male just as colorful as him.

Heres an old pic of my dominant male with the mirror in the background.
