So I just moved a cooler that's been sitting in one place since the Convention. I just dumped some new substrate in from a bucket that dried up and the granules need to be re-livened. I keep 2-3" sand in my coolers at all time, and I always have a "cycled", ready-to-go cooler for any collection.

Anyway, when I dumped in the substrate, I found there was a glassy darter in the cooler that's been there since, no worse for the wear. In fact, I'd say it's pretty danged fat.

Probably been eating newly hatched snails. How fun is that?

Now, that is just awesome!

Your cycled sand idea is intreaguing. Do you think it makes a big difference? Do you let the sand dry out between trips (like the sand you mentioned), or do you usually keep it wet? What's your SOP? (Do tell, do tell, do tell...)
