Friend of mine caught this sunfish in a brackish tidal creek near Charleston SC and I'm at a loss to identify it.

The structure suggests a warmouth but the red fins and stripes clearly do not.

I'm not aware of any inshore saltwater species that looks like this.

He said he thinks it's a mangrove snapper. I know we get snook around here sometimes.

Searching online I cannot find a mangrove that looks like this

I always call them Gray Snapper, but yes, it appears to be a juvenile Lutjanus griseus, which is not a sunfish.  Although Pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) are commonly found in brackish water...upper teens to low 20's IME.

Ok, thank you! Based only on the pic I would have said sunfish of some sort all day long lol but my friend also said this one was toothy, which validates the snapper.
