This is not really a complaint, just trying to understand how to best use the forum...

I am interested in reading pretty much everything that gets posted... I mean how are you going to learn if you don't read about different topic? So when I first joined the forum I went back and read everything that was posted... then marked it all as read... and then whenever I log in, I can select the "view new posts" up on the menu bar above... but if while I am reading these I get interuped... or otherwise logged off... when I log back in, the "view new posts" only shows the posts new since my last login... so I amprobaly missing something.

Is there not someway to control the forum so that I can see, all the posts that I have not seen... even if they are not quite new since my last login?

Or am I using the forum wrong... how do you guys go about reading the forum?

Michael,

This happens to me only on occasion. I'm curious why this happens to you regularly.

You don't need to mark posts that you've read since the forum will do that automatically.

If you log back in and click the "view new posts" and your convinced you still have unread posts you will see a "new" icon next to the sub forum which has a new post or topic. Do not click these or your marker will disappear. (please see below photo) This "new" icon will not go away until you actually read the new posts regardless of how many times you log in and out.

If you then click on the sub-forum text and open the forum, you will see a small square icon indicating a new post (if you click on the small square icon, you will be directed to the last unread post).

I think where you might miss post is due to marking topics as read. I would just let the forum mark them as read for you since any error when clicking posts as read will lose your marker and miss posts.

I hope this helps and answers your questions.

You're absolutely right, Uland. I think what he's getting at, though, is, instead of "view new posts", it would be nice to have a "view unread posts" feature that will bring all these unread posts together in one place. I don't know if this is possible, but I'd like to have this feature also if it is possible.

Another alternative would be to keep a post marked "new" until it is read, so it will always show up in "view new posts". I don't know if that is possible, either.

I think one way this situation arises it this. You get an e-mail telling you that you have a new PM. You log on to read the PM, but you don't have time to read all new posts. When you log on later, intending to read the new posts, the forum software no longer sees them as new.

Also, the dropdown box "Get active topics for:" today, etc. only appears if you use the "view new posts" feature. If you have no new posts, you do not seem to have access to this dropdown box. Can this be added to the bottom of the main page?

Ed, you are right on... I have that problem all the time... I log on, but do not have time to read them all... "view unread" would be exactly a great feature for me. But what Uland suggested may also solve the problem, as long as I do not use the "mark all as read and return to forum" that is provided on the "view new posts".
