I was wondering if anyone ever tried and had any success with some lily pads in the aquarium. I always thought that would look cool and natural but wasn't sure how to do it, a few people said it wouldn't work. In addition on my aquarium this is pretty high water flow on the top due to the power filters and I think that disturbs the lily pads, but was curious about anyone's experience.

In my limited experience lilies do not do well with water flow. Plus, wild lilies I have collected have HUGE roots (rhizomes?) - over 2 feet long. That's a bit large for most aquaria.

The flow is going to be a problem, but if you decided to do this in another tank with little to no flow, banana plants would work for you. These are native to the SE US and send up some very nice floating leaves.

I put 2 average size lily pads in my aquarium every month or so in my 29 gal... they eventually die but the placostomas loves ot eat them and I enjoy how they look and what they add to the tank. Plus the park by my house has a bayou with an endless supply so it's a win-win!

Like others have said before me flow is an issue..... if you have little to med flow you can get it to work. Just make sure your substate is deep enough to support the plant..... What size tank are you working with? You will also need a consistant fert plan or a strong nutrient rich substate since, in my experience, they require a lot of nutrients. Lighting is also important if you want to keep them for long term and to get them to flower..... If you have any questions just msg me.... I keep and have kept may different water lilies.....

For smaller tanks...banana plants and those Dwarf African water lilys sold in plant bulbs work ok(though they too eventually get rather big for most tanks).

My home depot water lilly is still doing fine in my 55 gallon long, under a 48 inch T8 shoplight. Lots of leaves on the surface, stems all tangled up below the surface. Filtration is with an Aquaclear 500.
Intense light and relatively calm water will do the trick.
For smaller tanks...banana plants and those Dwarf African water lilys sold in plant bulbs work ok(though they too eventually get rather big for most tanks).
