I had about an hour today to stop by the Barren River in Warren county Kentucky. I only had my dipnet on me, but I ended up catching 4 blackstripe topminnow. They are now in my tank, and they look beautiful! I also found Gambusia mixed in with them. From the shore I could see lots of shad swimming around and some juvenile bass. I saw a school of BLUE looking fish! I have no idea what they were and the water was too deep for me to chase after them. I will try to get a hold of some.

If anyone wants some blackstripe topminnows, I'd be willing to trade. They are plentiful in the river.

Blue all over, or just parts of them were blue?

Well, they were hugging the surface of the water, so I would say their back and some of the sides were almost sky blue looking. I desperately want to catch some now!

The blue fish you saw might be scarlet shiners (Lythrurus fasciolaris), who have a metallic blue body to a greater or lesser degree.

I think you may be right. Natureserve tells me scarlet shiners are found in the county I saw them in and are common/secured. Thinking back, I remember seeing a black line on their back as well, and a google image search shows a scarlet shiner with a black line. They look beautiful! Now I just have to brave the river to get a hold of some. I will try to make it out there again this week and see if I can get them, and will let you all know. I want to contribute something to the community so if anyone wants some if I happen to catch them, I'd be willing to trade or send them for shipping compensation. Thanks.

If you find any scarlets, you'll find a lot. They're one of those species. I always thought they're underappreciated, since males can turn electric blues and deep reds. They're easy to keep in aquaria, too. Once they stop freaking out they'll eat flake with great gusto.
