I guess you'd call it breaching--the fish is somehow causing splashes at the surface, I think by jetting around at the surface and partially leaving the water. A minute ago I saw him doing the same thing near a rock in the tank. I can't see any kind of parasite on him, but I don't entirely know what to be looking for on one of these guys. Anyone seen this before and/or know what it is?

Yeah, it's pretty much what they do as part of the topminnow lifestyle. I've seen ones in my tanks "breech" in pursuit of fruitflies flying over the water surface.

Please elaborate on what you mean by "breech". I am familiar with this term. Thanks.

I'm assuming that you mean that you're not familiar with it? IME it's used mostly with whales to describe their leaping out of the water. While my topminnow isn't exactly pulling a humpback or anything I thought it would be a reasonable word to use.

Thanks for the clarification! Your fish leaps in and out of the water? Make sure you have all your areas of surface water covered. I had a nice looking chub jump out once around the filter. My blackstripes usually rest in the middle of the tank, and not so much the surface.

Well I haven't actually seen him do it at the surface but every other night or so I hear a series of little splashes and I've seen him jetting around like he was the one making them.
