New here... not brand new, but I finally uploaded pics of my tank. Anyone in Illinois wanna do any sampling soon? I am in search of two orangespotted sunfish.

Welcome schoolofperch!

I'm also from Illinois and hope you live closer to Sandwich than Macomb since Sandwich is a whole lot closer to me.

We have a new member in the Morris area and I think the three of us can find some pretty neat spots.

Let's try and get something together soon ....http://forum.nanfa.o...showtopic=2745

BTW your tanks look great!

Yep, yep, yep, and yep. Also, stonerollers, what I think is an ozark chub, rainbow darters, and some other species that i haven't identified. The unidentified one is visible in the 4th pic down and is the most obvious fish facing to the left. Anyone have any insight?

I took the liberty of isolating that fish and sharpening it a bit. I'm certain it's not a Fundulus and would take a wild guess at the genus as Lythrurus . I'm afraid that photo will not be suitable for ID.

Does not look like a BST with that forked tail, but perhaps the photo just caught during a flick of the tail. In the next picture (which I am assuming was taken within a second or two) the same fish does look a lot more like a topminnow.

With a basicaudal spot and the silvery lateral line this fish isn't a Fundulus species. Lythrurus might be the best guess, and guess is all we can do with this image (although I bet it's not a hybrid, just saying...).

There are topminnows in the tank, but as Teleost said the fish pointed left in the fourth pic is definitely a shiner of some sort. Maybe schoolofperch meant the fish pointing left in the 5th picture? That is a blackstripe topminnow. There is also a topminnow pointing left in the 4th picture, but it is not as obvious as the shiner.

I've attempted to key the fish out before, and it is some kind of shiner. I just can't figure out what kind exactly. I am not very proficient at differentiating between them. I will try and take a clearer picture than that 4th pic. I wish I could get a good pic of what i think is an ozark chub. It has an obvious light/dark alternating stripe down the midline of the back. Would any similar fish have that?

Where did you collect that shiner from? That can be a good way of narrowing down the possibilities at least.

It was caught in a shallow sand/rock creek, downstream from a man-made lake. In Mcdonough county Illinois.

Welcome to the forum. I am from northeastern Illinois (Chicagoland area), and I like to collect in Illinois. You have a great tank set-up. Good assemblage of some of my favorite minnows. Hopefully we can get in the water sometime. I'll actually be on the Green River (trib. to the Mississippi River in western Illinois) for the next few weeks doing electrofishing surveys.

If this is the discharge from Argyle lake you have many possibilities since the east fork of the La Moine is right there.
Lythrurus umbratilis, Notropis dorsalis, Notropis stramineus & Cyprinella lutrensis are on the list.

If this is Spring creek the list is much smaller.
