Caught this guy a bout two weeks ago in the Seneca river near Cayuga lake (Montezuma Wildlife Refuge). I'm fairly sure this is just a bluegill and nothing more but IMO the colors look a bit odd. At first I thought it could be a bluegill and pumpkinseed hybrid but now I just think it's a bluegill, just looking to varify that. The only Lepomis species in the are are bluegills, pumpkinseeds and greens.
Even if it is just a bluegill I do think it's a very nice looking specimen. If I had the space I would have kept it.
Could This Sunfish Be...a Hybrid!

I agree. I would have found room to keep it.

I think the hybrid sceptics will be amazed here because I am going to say yes thats just a pure bluegill, probably a male because of the rather orange color to the chest.

I figured the same. What made me think it was a hybrid is the specks of orange over the body, reminds me of a pumpkinseed.
